Plato, Ancient Greek philosopher. Plato (c428-c348 BC) was a student of Socrates and teacher of Aristotle. His most famous work is The Republic, in which he outlines his vision of an ideal state. Plato founded the Academy in Athens, one of the earliest known organised institutions of learning in Western civilization. Marble bust.
