Caroline Chisholm addressing a crowd from the emigrant ship 'Ballengeich', 1852. Caroline Chisholm (nee Jones) (1808-1877), British philanthropist and reformer, was born at Wootton, near Northampton. Known as The Emigrant's Friend, she campaigned for improvement in conditions for female emigrants to Australia, and for family emigration. Here addressing crowd from the emigrant ship 'Ballengeich' before it departed from Southampton for Australia. From The Illustrated London News, (London, August 1852).
