Lionel Nathan de Rothschild, Baron Rothschild c1880. Rothschild (1808-1879) British banker and philanthropist, eldest son of Nathan Meyer Rothschild, in 1836 became head of the Rothschild banking house in England. He sat in Parliament as Member for the City of London in 1847 but was not allowed to take his seat because, as a Jew, he was unable to take the oath.
