Scene from Adam Bede by George Eliot, c1885. In his tall stalwartness Adam Bede was a Saxon and justified his name. Adam, the village carpenter, in the workshop, his dog Gyp on a pile of shavings under the bench. The novel is set in the late 18th century and the men all wear the typical carpenter's cap and apron. From Adam Bede by George Eliot, first published London, 1859.
