Scene from The Red Shoes by Hans Christian Andersen, c1879. Karen being given her first pair of red shoes by the shoemaker's wife on the day her mother dies. Andersen's tales were strongly influenced by Danish Folklore. They were published from 1835 onwards and the first English translations were published in 1846.
