'Hoxton Division', 1899. James Stuart (1843-1913) British mathematician and engineer, champion of university education for women. He was appointed to the new chair of Mechanism and Applied Mathematics at Cambridge, England, in 1875, resigning in 1890. In this post, with minimal help from the University, he established Engineering as a subject for study at Cambridge.
