'The Mur de la Cote', c1855. From the mid 19th century, the British professional and leisured classes travelled to the Alps for health and recreation. The more active and adventurous amongst them hired mountain guides and conquered ever more difficult routes, turning mountain climbing into the sport of Alpinism. 'The Mur de la Cote' is one of a set of four Baxter prints of The Ascent of Mont Blanc. (London, 1855).
