'British Short Horn', 1839. The shorthorn, an English breed of cattle with a recorded history back to the 18th century. Originally a dual purpose, dairy and beef, animal, by the early 1800s two separate strains were being developed. From Wild and Domestic Cattle, edited by William Jardine in his New Naturalist series, (Edinburgh, 1833-1845).
