'Portrait of Oliver Cromwell', (c1653?). Head and shoulders portrait of Oliver Cromwell in armour, within an oval frame. This is one of several replicas of a portrait by Sir Peter Lely. Cromwell is supposed to have said: 'Mr Lely, I desire you would use all your skill to paint my picture truly like me, and not flatter me at all; but remark all the roughness, pimples, warts and everything, otherwise I will never pay a farthing for it.' This is a somewhat softened version of the original brief, and thus may not be a 'warts and all' portrayal.
