'Chiswick from the River', c1675. The Thames waterfront at Chiswick when it was still a village on the outskirts of London. From left to right are: Old Corney House, a property acquired by John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford, in 1542; the parish church of St Nicholas; and Chiswick Eyot, a small island. The ship on the right bears the arms of the City Corporation and is firing a salute. Barges with freight move up and down the river, and a carriage arrives at the gate of one of the houses. The painting is important since it shows the first painted London garden.
