Charles Dickens' chair, before c1859. Upholstered chair with wheels. Many photographic portraits of the author Charles Dickens taken around 1859, the period during which he was writing A Tale of Two Cities, show him sitting in this chair. A silver plaque records that after Dickens gave it to a friend, it passed through the hands of many collectors until it was offered to the London Museum.
