Infant's knitted sock, vest and mitten, (mid-16th century?). Baby clothes knitted in soft white wool; the mitten has a contrasting band, probably of naturally black sheep's wool. Several medieval paintings of the Virgin and Child show the Virgin knitting a similar vest-like garment for her son, on three to five needles.
