Prehistoric clearing of wildwood. This is an artist's impression. The earliest farming communities probably hacked new fields from the forest during the autumn after the harvest. Each year they would have expanded the clearance away from their settlement, leaving the tree stumps in place until they rotted and sowing the seed amongst them.
