Nightman's plaque, 18th century. Brass plaque advertising the services of Nicholas Arendell, a London 'Chimney Sweeper and Nightman'. A nightman would go round emptying privies in the days before the introduction of flush lavatories. Two men can be seen carrying a tub of excrement to a cart, while their horses eat hay.
