Delftware floor tiles, early 17th century. Tiles with men's heads and animals. The proposed manufacture of Delftware, a colourfully painted luxury pottery, is first recorded in London in 1570. Documentary evidence suggests that between 1571 and 1615 there may have been as many as thirteen Flemish potters working in the Aldgate area. The industry then moved to Southwark.
