Interior of the Temple of Mithras. Artist's impression of an initiation rite. Mithras was the Persian god of heavenly light, and his worship came to the Romans by way of Asia Minor. Mithraism was one of the many mystery religions introduced from the East. Mystery religions acted as secret societies with initiation rites known only to members.
