Saxon brooch from Lundenwic, 7th-9th century. Early brooch from Lundenwic, a flourishing Anglo-Saxon town and trading and production centre which lay below the present Covent Garden. Lundenwic was abandoned in the 9th century because of Viking raids which forced the Saxons back behind the Roman walls still standing around the City of London.
