Suffragettes making banners for the procession to Hyde Park on 23rd July 1910. The motto of the WSPU, (Women's Social and Political Union), 'Deeds Not Words', is the legend on one. The date for the demonstration was chosen because it was the anniversary of the Men's Franchise Demonstration of 1866 when the railings in Hyde Park were torn down. It was hoped that the public would be reminded that male suffrage had not been a quiet and peaceful affair. At the time this photograph was taken the Artists' Suffrage League, responsible for many of the WSPU's banners, had its atelier at No 1 Pembroke Cottages, Edwardes Square, Kensington, London.
