Elephant and Castle, Southwark, London, c1805-c1820. The junction of three roads. On the left a man herds his cattle past a man with a wheelbarrow and a man carrying a box on his back. Horse drawn coaches and carriages pull up outside the inn, the sign of which is an elephant with a castle on its back. Next door to the inn is the house of God. On the far right a street seller trades from baskets on the back of his animal, which is tentatively sniffing a dog.
