Suffragettes campaigning during a by-election, c1910. The Liberal government of Herbert Asquith refused to give the vote to women. Here, suffragettes from the Women's Social and Political Union urge people to vote against the Liberals. Many women were sent to prison and force-fed during the campaign - women finally won the vote in 1928.
