'The Bull's-Eye', 1872. A policeman shines a lantern into the faces of a group of people, including an old man and two young girls, as they shelter by a wall. Gloomy figures lean out of the window just above the light, and above the policemen's heads. The bull's eye refers to the name of the lens in the policeman's lantern. An engraving from London: A Pilgrimage. The writer Blanchard Jerrold suggested to Gustave Doré that they collaborated on a work portraying London life. Doré created a total of 180 engravings for this work. Many criticised the book for concentrating on the poverty of London.
