'Borough Market', 1872. Two women sit and wait amongst baskets of fruit on the right. On the left a man kneels down at a pile of empty baskets. Behind them are crowds of people at various stalls in the vast market. The names of the market traders have been fixed to the slender pillars and around the central dome. An engraving from London: A Pilgrimage. The writer Blanchard Jerrold suggested to Gustave Doré that they collaborated on a work portraying London life. Doré created a total of 180 engravings for this work. Many criticised the book for concentrating on the poverty of London.
