'The Beggar's Opera Act III', 18th century. The scene takes place in Newgate Prison. The imprisoned highwayman Macheath stands between Lucy Lockit on the left and Polly Peachum on the right. The two women are begging with their fathers to save him from being hanged, as they both love him. The audience are on either side of the performance.
