The Politician (Portrait of Mr Tilson, formerly a laceman in the Strand), c1730. A shortsighted politician, thought to be Mr Tilson, a well-known lacemaker in the Strand, is so absorbed by his newspaper that he does not realise that the candle he is holding has set fire to the brim of his tricorne hat.
