The actor David Garrick in the role of Richard III, 1746. He wildly stares out at the viewer with a dagger in one hand. He sits before a crucifix and his crown. At his feet is a suit of armour. Outside his luxurious tent can be seen a camp, with soldiers sitting round a fire. He is depicting Scene 17 of Act 5 from Shakespeare's play Richard III. Garrick was the most popular actor of his day.
