'Hudibras and the Lawyer', 18th century. Hudibras approaches the lawyer with his hat in his hand. The lawyer is sitting in an ornately carved alcoved desk, with two clerks writing at a table below him. The figure of Justice holding the scales is in front of them. The wall is lined with volumes of books. Two women stand in the doorway on the left. Plate VII from the story Hudibras, written by Samuel Butler. Hudibras is a colonel in the Cromwellian army. The story shows him getting involved in various misadventures, where he shows himself to be stupid, greedy and dishonest.
