'Just View of the British Stage, or Three Heads are Better then One', 18th century. A theatre stage with three theatre managers in the centre talking about their future plays. They play with puppets on the table and on a mini stage. Ben Johnson's ghost rises up from beneath the stage with a candle. Above the heads of the managers are nooses. On the right a man is already hanging from a rope. Hogarth has called the scene 'Scene Newgate' referring to the London prison notorious for public hangings. Hogarth has depicted the managers as criminals who should be hanged for offending the public with their productions.
