Gladice Keevil campaigning at the Manchester North West by-election, Lancashire, 1908. The suffragettes were determined to defeat Winston Churchill, the Liberal MP for the constituency. He had recently been promoted to President of the Board of Trade and had to stand for re-election. He lost his Manchester seat to the Conservative candidate Joynson Hicks, but was quickly elected as MP for Dundee, a seat he would hold until 1922.
