Jimmy Murphy, winner of the Indianapolis 500, 1922. American driver Murphy was best known for his performances in Indycar racing in the early 1920s, but he also won the 1921 French Grand Prix. In winning the 1922 Indianapolis 500, he led for 153 of the 200 laps on his way to the $28,075 prize. He finished 3rd in the race the next two years. Later in 1924, however, Murphy was killed racing at Syracuse, New York.
