Fangio in Alfa Romeo, prior to the San Remo Grand Prix, Italy, 1950. Juan Manuel Fangio won the race, his first at the wheel of an Alfa Romeo. In his Formula 1 career between 1950 and 1958, Fangio won a then record 24 Grands Prix, driving for Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Ferrari and won the World Drivers' Championship in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957, a record which remains unequalled.
