Alfred Neubauer with Mercedes car at the Start of the Italian Grand Prix, Monza, 1938. Neubauer, extreme left, accompanies the car of Caracciola as it is pushed into position on the starting grid. The car finished third. In 1926, Neubauer took over as manager of the Mercedes-Benz racing team, bringing in many innovative practices and presiding over its many successes until 1955. The company pulled out of racing in 1955 after one of their cars was involved in a disastrous crash at Le Mans, and Neubauer retired shortly afterwards.
