Johnny Dunlop, aged about ten, riding his tricycle with rubber tyres, 1888. His father, John Dunlop, was the inventor of the pneumatic rubber tyre. He was inspired by his son's complaints that solid wheels jarred him, and so produced 'air-cushion' hosepipe tyres.
