Vincenzo Lancia taking part in the Targa Florio race, Sicily, April 1907. Driving a Fiat, he came second in the race. He was the son of an Italian soup manufacturer, and began his career as Fiat's chief test driver. In 1904 he won the Coppa Florio motor race in Italy. He stopped competition driving in 1908 to build his own cars.
