General Allenby entering through the Jaffa Gate into Jerusalem, 1917. In 1917, General Allenby was commander of the British Expeditionary Forces in Egypt. He commanded British troops that advanced across the Sinai desert and captured the Negev. Under instructions from the British Foreign Office, Allenby entered Jerusalem on foot as a mark of respect for the sacredness of the city.
