Flagellation on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, early 18th century. Engraving entitled 'La Penitence des Juifs Allemans dans leur Synagogue' (The Penitence of the German Jews in their Synagogue). This scene is probably set in Amsterdam, and shows an Ashkenazi synagogue. The engraver Bernard Picart was born a Catholic in Paris. His depictions of Jewish ritual and tradition are an important resource for the study of Jewish life as well as being of interest from an art historical perspective.
