Members of the Hebrew Language Council, 1912. On the right is Lithuanian-born Jewish scholar and leader Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, (1858-1922), the Father of Modern Hebrew. Eliezer Perelman changed his name, settled in Palestine and dedicated himself to the revival of Hebrew as the national language. His 16-volume Dictionary of Ancient and Modern Hebrew contributed significantly to this end. Ben-Yehuda founded the Hebrew Language Council, devoted to promoting and regulating the development of the Hebrew language. It became the Academy of Hebrew Language in 1953.
