Warsaw Ghetto, Poland, World War II, 1940-1945. In 1940, Nazi Germany isolated Warsaw's Jews in a ghetto. In 1942 about 500,000 people were living a hand-to-mouth existence there, suffering terrible hardships. After an uprising in February 1943, the Germans killed an estimated 40,000 people in reprisal. Only about 200 Jews remained when the city was liberated by Soviet soldiers in 1945.
