Alexander Gordon Laing, Scottish explorer, (1870). Whilst exploring the basin of the River Niger, Laing (1793-1826) became the first European to reach Timbuktu. He was murdered shortly after leaving the city in September 1826. An engraving from Robert Chambers' A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Blackie and Son, (Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London, 1870).
