John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale, Scottish politician, (1870). Lauderdale (1616-1682) was a member of the Cabal, a powerful group of five Privy Councillors who directed British government policy through the council's Committee for Foreign Affairs between 1668 and 1674 during the reign of Charles II.
