John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale, Scottish politician, (1870). Lauderdale (1616-1682) was a member of the Cabal, a powerful group of five Privy Councillors who directed British government policy through the council's Committee for Foreign Affairs between 1668 and 1674 during the reign of Charles II. An engraving from Robert Chambers' A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Blackie and Son, (Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London, 1870).
