Plan of Delhi, India, 1857-1858, (1893). Delhi was besieged and captured by the British in 1857 during the Indian Mutiny. The capture of the city from the mutineers was vital to the British due to its symbolic importance as the seat of India's Mughal rulers. An engraving from James Taylor's "The Age We Live In: A History of the Nineteenth Century, From the Peace of 1815 to the Present Time", William Mackenzie, (London, 1893).
