Louis Franchet d'Esperey, French First World War general, (1926). Franchet d'Esperey (1856-1942) commanded the French 5th Army at the Battle of the Marne in September 1914, after which he was promoted to command the Eastern Army Group. Blamed for the French defeat at Third Battle of the Aisne in May 1918, Franchet d'Esperey was re-assigned to command the Allied campaign in Salonika, a task which he undertook with conspicuous success.
