Albert I of Belgium on the way to parliament, 1914. Despite its status as a neutral country, Belgium was invaded by Germany on 4 August 1914 after the Belgian government refused a German ultimatum demanding passage for its army through Belgium to attack France. King Albert I personally commanded Belgium's army against the invaders.
