Major-General Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive of Plassey, British statesman and general, (1833). In 1757 at the Battle of Plassey, Clive (1725-1774) and British troops secured Bengal under the control of the East India Company, and therefore British rule. Lord Clive was rewarded with an annual salary of £30,000, and the sum of £234,000.
