John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, presenting a book to Margaret of Anjou, c1445, (1910). John Talbot presents Margaret of Anjou with an illuminated book (The Shrewsbury Book), which he had had made for her. The book was written in French for her instruction and entertainment, that she might not forget her native tongue. The contents consist chiefly of romances of Chivalrie. Margaret sits beside her husband, King Henry VI, who wears a short tippet of ermine, with a voluminous ermine-lined mantle, open at the side, covering a houppelande with open sleeves. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910).
