Lady Mary, 16th century, (1910). Portrait of Queen Mary wearing a pyramidal style headdress with ribbed bands of silk upon the forehead forming the foundation, a small portion of hair appearing underneath it. Round the face is a wired framework of the kennel form, over which is a broad band which is looped upon either side and pinned on top of the head. The bag which previously hung down the back is also brought up and pinned - as it is stiffened, it presents a rather ungainly appearance as it projects on either side. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910).
