The Macaronies, 1772, (1910). The Macaroni Club in London was founded in 1772 by young men of the fashionable world who had been on the Grand Tour in Italy, in opposition to the Beef-Steak Club. The hair is drawn upwards in a large toupee with rolled curls at the sides - behind, it was made into an enormous knob which rested on the back of the neck, with an extremely small hat on top and a large scarf tied in a bow round the neck. The coat is edged with lace or braid and decorated with frog buttons, tassels, and embroidery. The breeches are of striped silk with strings at the knee, and silk stockings. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910).
