Belgian bicycle troops using Hotchkiss machine guns in Haelen, Belgium, August 1914. Haelen saw the first cavalry engagement of the First World War, when the Belgian army repelled several German cavalry charges. The engagement was an early indicator of the obsolecence of the cavalry charge.
