Gordon's Statue and National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London, 20th century. The statue commemorating General Charles George Gordon, killed at Khartoum in 1885, was erected in 1888 but was relocated to the Victoria Embankment in the 1950s. Construction of the National Gallery, designed by William Wilkins, began in 1837. In the 1870s, with the Gallery's collection growing too large for the building, an East Wing was added by Edward Middleton Barry.
