Maunoury, (1847-1923), was recalled from retirement at the outset of the war to lead the so-called 'Army of Lorraine', intended to retake the province of Lorraine lost to Germany in the Franco-Prussian War. As events unfolded his force was redeployed, playing a crucial role in halting the German advance at the Battle of the Marne which saved Paris.
