Anthony van Diemen, Dutch colonial governor, (1886). Van Diemen (1593-1645) was Governer-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1636 and sponsored the exploration of the oceans to the south of Indonesia. Tasmania was named after him by Abel Tasman when he discovered it in 1642.
